BUNRAKU - Japan
A short (3 minutes) scene using your constructed Bunraku newspaper puppets.
In the scene you must show the following:
o Teamwork to manipulate the puppet effectively
o Walking, Reacting, interacting, thinking, breath
o A story that has a beginning, middle and end
o A story that tackles a larger theme (loneliness, isolation, connection, the fear of exploration, etc, etc, etc) and goes beyond simple demonstration
o Staying in character and working to create the scene – the puppet is the focus
After watching the video of your performance (which was fantastic by the way), address the following questions in your Journal.
- How did your performance differ from traditional Bunraku practices as we studied?
- What was the most difficult part of the performance? What did you learn about a performing as a puppetry team?
- If you were to do this again what would you keep and what would you do different?
- How might you use or adapt this world theatre tradition ask you begin to make theatre?
